What is management?

Management is any role that involves leadership and management in any form. Management means being responsible for the work of both yourself and others, as well as lots of organisation and communication to ensure that your department is running smoothly.

This responsibility applies whether it’s frontline management, including lots of on the spot decision-making, or something like human resource management, with lots of business strategy.

Why study management?

In Australia, while you can work your way up from the bottom, doing a course shows both current and potential employers that you’re serious about ending up in business and management. Whether it’s in the public sector, working for the government, or a private corporation, a management course can be highly beneficial. Possible courses include:

  • Bachelor of Commerce
  • Graduate Certificate in Business Administration
  • Bachelor of Business
  • Advanced Diploma of international business
  • Business Management Certificate
  • Master of Business Administration

How to study:

Both higher education and TAFE schools offer courses to make you a master of management. All pathways will have different entry requirements and result in a slightly different skill set; whether you go to a specific school of management, a business school, or study at an Australian Institute of TAFE. Consider whether you need a business degree, undergraduate degree, or one of many short courses that can help you if you’ve already got experience. Current students should also consider whether recognition of prior learning is an option.

With the surge in online study options, you can live in Sydney, NSW, but studying a course in Business management from Brisbane or an information technology course with one of many research centres in Melbourne without having to leave home. Many courses will also offer both full-time and part-time study options. International students should consult CRICOS for further information before committing to course workshops, including information about key dates and checking with an RTO’s ABN.
