What is graphic design?

Graphic design involves using images and text to create advertisements and other marketing tools. To be an effective graphic designer you have to:

  • Understand communication design and how to use your communication skills in a graphic format
  • Be able to come up with design solutions and have strong problem solving to create the most effective designs possible
  • Be able to utilise programs like Adobe, design studio, and Photoshop within the design process
  • Understand design briefs and apply your design skills to a specific design project

Why should I study graphic design?

Many people are self-taught, and while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, having a diploma of graphic design or an advanced diploma shows employers that you understand the creative industries, as well as basics of visual arts and design thinking. A course will also teach you the ins and outs of specific programs that you may be required to use within your career, and give you real-world experience. Each course has different course fees and entry requirements, but generally short courses don’t require high ATAR’s and are cheaper than higher education. There are also often distance learning options and support systems in place for international students, so make sure to check out each course individually and CRICOS for more information.

Where could a graphic design career take me?

If you’re an Australian looking to stay here, every city, including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane has an enormous range of work for a talented graphic designer. Plus, with much of graphic designers work being able to be done from home, you could work from rural NSW or Victoria and enjoy a country lifestyle. Working in graphic design can also take you all over the world, from New York to London and beyond.

Possible career goals in the design industry include:

  • Creative Director
  • Art Director
  • Web Designer
