What is animal care?
Animal care refers to any kind of work that involves providing support to and for animals. That includes:
- Working with companion animal services, including looking after a companion animal
- Animal health jobs, including being a veterinary nurse or animal attendant, or other veterinary services
- Working for the RSPCA or in the welfare of animals
- Pet grooming
- Pet care and pet sitting
- Working with captive animals in zoos or pet shops
- Animal science
- Becoming an animal trainer
Why study animal care?
Animal care courses can help you specialise in an area that will allow you to have a lifelong career in a hands-on capacity working with animals. The animal care industry, however, is a large one, and trying to figure out which area you’re interested in is important. Doing a short course is the perfect way to figure out which area you’re interested in working in.
Possible courses include:
- Certificate IV in veterinary nursing
- Certificate II in animal studies
- Certificate III in animal studies
- Vet assistant certificate
- Equine Care Certificate
- Animal welfare certificate
Many courses can be completed either full time or part time, and some are available as an online course, too.It means you can study to be a pet groomer, animal-science specialist or in pet insurance however suits you best.
Courses are also available all over Australia including in Sydney, NSW and Victoria, as well as at rural TAFE schools.
Which course should I do?
Australian laws and regulations in regards to animal care are regularly changing and updating. For example, Victoria has recently outlawed puppy mills, and the RSPCA now hands out free pet first aid guides to help pet owners.
