What is dentistry?

Dentistry is an area that covers all elements of oral medicine, oral hygiene, oral health care, oral surgery and general dental treatments. Working in dentistry can mean:

  • Working in dental surgery, seeing regular patients for check-ups and cleans
  • Working as one of many dental specialists, dealing with specific oral illnesses or problems
  • Working as one of many dental hygienists
  • Working with clients to recommend when they need wisdom teeth removed and referring them to other specialists
  • Reading x-rays and making endodontics recommendations
  • Fitting patients for high-quality dentures, mouth guards and other dental services
  • Working in a dental hospital in research facilities in health sciences, developing new technologies and treatments for general practice or people with special needs
  • Working in a dental clinic for those who can’t afford the cost of the specialist dental sector

Why study dentistry?

You can’t work in a dental clinic without having studied at a dental school or completed a course. If you want to be one of many certified dental practitioners, you’ll need at least a Bachelor of Dental Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Science. You’ll also need to be recognised by the dental board of Australia. However, several short courses will help you to get a head start. There are also many professional development courses that general dentistry practitioners should undertake to ensure that they keep their skills up to date. Either way, studying to work in health service is compulsory for those who want to work in the dental industry.

How to study

Whether you want to work in private practice or the public health system, there are numerous courses available. Depending on the school and level of qualification, you can do online courses or face to face. Something like a Doctor of Dental Medicine will require at least some in-person contact. Online courses mean that you can live in Melbourne but complete a course based in NSW. International students should check with CRICOS to double-check which courses are relevant for them.
