What does TESOL mean?
TESOL stands for “Teaching English as A Second Language” and helps people learn English language teaching methods. TESOL teachers are employed in a range of areas, from within Australia helping international students understand how to navigate elements like a CRICOS code, overseas teaching professional development courses. Teachers of English may find themselves:
- Creating and marking coursework
- Helping students prepare for and pass English language requirements
- Helping students pass entry requirements for university, a higher degree level or TAFE
- Creating career opportunities for students
- Supporting students as they cope with changes in culture
- Teaching everyday lingo and slang
- Travelling to Melbourne or Sydney to help students complete practicum areas of their course
Why should I study TESOL?
If you want to work in a school or other official capacity, you’ll need not only teaching experience, but also some kind of language education, and a TESOL course can give you both. There are heaps of career opportunities for TESOL teachers, both in Australia and overseas. If you know a foreign language you can teach ESL overseas in a high school or primary school, or to adults who are looking to learn a language centres. Alternatively, you can stay in Australia or New Zealand and teach a domestic student who may not speak English at home or exchange students, or work with refugees or other migrants who have recently arrived in the country.
How can I complete my language education course?
There are heaps of options for future students of language, and many people who want to complete a bachelor degree or research degrees start with a graduate diploma or other courses in language acquisition.
There is a range of study options, including online courses, as well as both full-time options and part-time opportunities. Whether you want to end up in a refugee camp or completing your master of teaching English, there’s a course for you!
