What is IT security?

IT Security refers to every element of protecting IT systems from cyber threats, including:

  • Malware
  • Cybercrime
  • Phishing
  • Ransomware
  • Scam threats
  • Spyware
  • Identity theft
  • Other malicious software

It can involve a range of tasks and roles, all to protect sensitive information from cyber security threats.

Where can IT security take me?

Computer security is a huge issue for almost every organisation in the world due to our reliance on the internet of things (IoT) and increasing technological adaptations. Whether you want to work in a security team, hunt down cyber criminals, or you need to understand a different operating system for your job as a receptionist, or even just want to recognise suspicious activity on your own device, learning about cyber security measures is invaluable in today’s world.

That means that jobs for cyber security professionals are only going to become more in demand, as security capabilities of companies become a legitimate reason for denial of services.

A career in IT security could go anywhere – You could even end up working for a company like Google, consulting with them about their cyber security measures, or for NIST, teaching new security professionals just how it’s done!

Why should I do a course in IT security?

While many IT professionals start out as self-taught, there’s a lot to learn from the professionals. A course can teach you the basics across the bar so that you have a basic understanding of every area before choosing to specialise.

Possible areas you can learn about during an Information Technology security course include:

  • How to help a company develop a security policy across computer and mobile devices
  • Teaching organisations how network security can help stop cyber attacks
  • Working with corporations after a data breach
  • Creating an incident response plan for companies at high risk of unauthorized access threats
  • Work with and create a secure virtual private network (VPN)
  • Explaining security awareness to new employees
  • Creating security software or antivirus software
  • Putting into place cyber security measures, including a cyber security policy for how people use their smartphone or social media at work
  • What a white paper is and how it affects cyber security
  • Specialising in cloud security

A course can teach you all this and more, helping you understand every element of cyber risk for both a small business and a massive corporation.

Many courses can be taught online, as well as either part-time or full-time, making it easier than ever to complete a course! International students should check with CISCO first.

If you’re interested in learning about security measures, and how to respond to a cybersecurity incident, then a course in IT security could be for you. Browse our list of courses today to get started!
