Travel and tourism is an area that lots of people start when they’re young, but it’s also something that lots of people think they need to grow out of and go onto a non-tourism and travel job.
However, hospitality can, in fact, be an exciting career. Completing a course can give you valuable career opportunities by teaching you elements of events management, give you a chance to learn specialisations, and give you practical skills in places like a training restaurant, as well as ensuring that have the relevant qualifications, such as responsible service of alcohol or even First Aid.
Possible courses include:
Further study also proves to employers that you’re serious about your career goals in travel, tourism and hospitality and events industries.
Whether you want to work in a commercial kitchen or for a travel agency, there are heaps of Australian TAFE and individual institutions that can provide a variety of study modes and study options. Depending on the qualification level, you can do either online learning or face to face, as well as both full-time and part-time study choices.
An online course is more suited to the business side of the industry, as online learning obviously doesn’t allow for hands-on experience.
Equally, an in-person course or traineeships need to happen for courses that you need to practice something specific. For example, if you need to practice becoming a barista, you need to actually make a coffee to show your ability, or you’ll get zero results. Depending on which course you enrol in, you’ll have different requirements.
International students should check with CRICOS, in order to check an RTO code and ABN, which a CRICOS provider will do.
