The Construction industry generates over $360 billion in revenue, producing around 9% of Australia’s Gross Domestic Product, and has a projected annual growth rate of 2.4% in the next five years.
The VET sector plays an important role in the licencing of many occupations in this sector, with regulators requiring completion of VET programs or subjects to grant licences. There are currently 48,500 project builders and 38,200 builder’s labourers currently working in the construction industry. Construction Managers have a projected growth of 10.2% in the next 5 years.

- Apply building codes and standards to the construction process for Class 2 to 9 Type C
- Apply health and safety precautions on a work site
- Prepare simple building sketches and drawings

- Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects
- Select, prepare and administer a construction contract
- Produce labour and material schedules for ordering
- Apply structural principles to residential and commercial constructions

- Supervise site communication and administration processes for building and construction projects
- Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects
- Apply site surveys and set-out procedures to building and construction projects

The Certificate IV in Building and Construction meets the education requirements for registration as a licensed builder in all state and territory building licensing requirements.
ACT, TAS, NT, SA, & QLD – depending on the license required.

Course Features
The Certificate IV meets the education requirements for registration as a licensed builder in QLD, ACT, TAS and NT. As licensing varies from state to state, there may be extra requirements necessary to register. Chat to an Open Colleges’ Enrolment Consultant for more information on how to meet the requirements for your state.
NSW Fair Trading, the SA Consumer and Business Services (CBS), the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) and Builders Registration Board of WA might evaluate this qualification as part of a broader consideration of your experience and knowledge for registration as a licensed builder.

Eligibility
Entry requirements may vary depending on the course. In general, you must be at least 18 years old to enrol. If you’re under 18, you’ll need permission from a parent or guardian.
Please note: This course is not available to student visa holders.

Work Placement
While there is no mandatory workplacement, it is recommended that any students who are not currently employed at an appropriate workplace find a host organisation to undertake worksite visits.
Students will need to find a Workplace Mentor with an appropriate Host Organisation. An experienced and appropriately qualified Workplace Supervisor can act as a Workplace Mentor.
