Animal health is one of the areas that require you to complete study.
Even if you’re looking at something like becoming a pet groomer or owning an ethical pet shop, it’s unlikely that you’ll be trusted with vulnerable creatures without evidence that you understand the concept of good animal welfare and how to look after them.
If you’re looking to work in animal science, you’ll need to study a creature’s natural environment, as well as animal disease rates and animal behaviour. You’ll also need to be able to correlate and condense scientific evidence about the state of the animal. Working in Animal Science could mean working as a zookeeper with zoo animals, in a research lab, or in Animal Studies learning about new animal species.
If you’re interested in veterinary science, you’ll learn about animal well-being applying to pets and farm animals, common issues that come up in a veterinary clinic, and general animal health. You can study to be either a veterinarian or veterinary nursing.
You could also work in animal health and welfare inspecting kennels, animal housing of pet owners, and ensuring that a pet shop has appropriate shelter. Alternately, you could examine the use of animals in research, which sometimes crosses over and becomes animal welfare science.
