Here’s all you need to know about choosing a career as a Chef in Australia

Have you recently been looking at having a new career change and entering the interesting world of the food industry and becoming a chef in Australia?

Well, if this is the case for you, then it’s important to note what it’s really like for all the chef’s out there who have undertaken the skills necessary to turn that passion for cooking into a career.

Being a chef may seem like an excellent career choice for you, but have you ever wondered what it’s really like to work as a chef in Australia on a day-to-day basis?

Here’s all the necessary information to help you gain the skills, understanding and prepare you for your possible career in this exciting industry.

What exactly do chef’s do? There are many duties that chef’s must undertake in their daily lives and some of these duties often include the following:


  • Estimating food costs and ordering enough supplies.
  • Planning out food menus.
  • Ensure excellent quality of dishes and presentation during all aspects of food preparation.
  • Discuss any issues/suggestions for improvement with restaurant managers, dieticians and the kitchen team/waiting staff.
  • Prepare food/cooking of food.
  • Enforce hygiene regulations to other staff/may select staff to train.
  • Demonstrate some techniques and advise others for cooking procedures.
  • Cooperation with the kitchen team.

What sort of skills and qualifications are required of chefs?


In Australia, it’s estimated that around every 3 in 5 workers in the food industry don’t hold any post-school qualifications such as bachelor’s degrees. With around 24,000 of the younger workers being trainees or apprentices in this industry.


These are some of the compulsory or recommended qualifications undertaken by chefs in Australia:

  • A Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent.)

  • Completed apprenticeship.

  • Completion of Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or equivalent.

  • Strong understanding of Mathematics and English.

  • Relevant pre-apprenticeship: Certificate II in Hospitality or Certificate II in Kitchen Operations.

The good news that comes with being a chef is that the process to gain the necessary skills and qualifications don’t take as long as obtaining a bachelor’s degree.

Which means it’s perfect for a career change if you’re considering becoming a chef. There are plenty of short courses, diplomas and certificates that can be easily obtained without a long wait and lengthy hours.

If you’re someone who loves hands-on learning, teaching and advising others and a passion for cooking and excellent food presentation than a job as a chef would be a great option to look into.
