If you are after a satisfying career where you want to make a positive impact in young people’s lives and help them achieve their goals, our Diploma of Youth Work course will help you on the way of becoming a Youth Worker.

The Diploma of Youth Work course will develop your skills to build strong relationships and mentor young adults and youth who may require support.

The course covers aspects that address the social, behavioural, health, welfare, developmental and protection needs of young people.  You will learn how to mentor and promote the well-being of young people, how to develop and implement youth programs/events and much more.

Our Diploma of Youth Work course has a written and practical component in which you will receive a dedicated trainer team support throughout your studies. To achieve the Diploma of Youth Work qualification we will ensure you are assigned 200 hours of work placement experience to apply the skills and knowledge you have gained in a real-world setting.

What you'll learn

The CHC50421 Diploma of Youth Work covers 21 units focused on achieving specialist knowledge and competencies related to the Youth Work sector. Some of the key learning outcomes in this course include:

  • Work in a legal and ethical manner with people within a diverse community
  • Identify and support people with mental health and addiction needs
  • Supporting young people to take collective action and express their needs

  • Online delivery with access to Academic Assistance Team (AAT) and Student Support team
  • Practical assessments and simulated practicals conducted via video conferencing

Entry requirements

Prior to being enrolled into the VSL eligible course, TrainSmart Australia must reasonably believe that the applicant is academically suited and displays competence for the course requirements including meeting any of the set entry requirements. This is determined by either:

  • The student providing TrainSmart Australia with a copy of an Australian year 12 certificate of education; or,
  • The student providing TrainSmart Australia with a copy of a Certificate IV qualification (or above) that was delivered as a part of the AQF (Australian Qualification Framework), that can be verified by the issuing organisation or the USI (unique student identifier) transcript or,
  • The student completing the Core Skills Profile for Adults online assessment passing at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework in both reading and numeracy. TrainSmart Australia must also reasonably believe that the student displays that competence.

If you are unable to provide either of these, you will need to complete a free Online Reading, Writing and Numeracy test to gain entry into our course.

  • Simulated Practical – Simulated Practicals provide our students with a safe environment to demonstrate practical counselling skills within a simulated environment. Complete your practical assessments when you’re ready through our online booking service.
  • Dedicated Trainer Support – By enrolling into this course, you will have your own dedicated trainer to support you throughout the course duration.
  • University Pathways – TrainSmart Australia has a number of standing agreements in place with universities across Australia that guarantee student entry and credit transfers into a bachelor’s degree and further studies.

Work placement

  • This course requires 200 hours of practical work experience
  • Our Work Placement Coordinator Team is available to support you in securing placement opportunities

Recognition of prior learning

  • Students are eligible to apply for RPL, which will be conducted with a trainer through a series of interviews and document collation

Subjects

You will learn how to communicate effectively with young people from all different backgrounds and how to identify those young adults who may be at risk. You’ll also look at ways to support young people through mental health issues or if they are dealing with crisis situations.
